Odo of Urgell was the oldest son[1] of a family of counts of Barcelona, Spain. He became a soldier but gave this up to enter religious life. He later ascended to the position of archdeacon of Urgell in the Pyrenees and ordained by Pope Urban II, he was appointed Bishop of Urgell, and was celebrated for his concern for the poor.[2]
